Retail sales report shows strong consumer spending in July

US retail sales rose 0.7% in July from the previous month, beating economists' forecasts and booking the biggest increase in four months, according to a Commerce Department report. Spending grew in 10 of 13 categories, with a 2.8% increase in non-store spending leading the way, and department stores booked a 1.2% rise.
