Small-format demand drove 30% jump in grocery store openings

The US grocery category saw store openings rise by 30% last year, according to a report from JLL, which found that Publix, Sprouts Farmers Market, Aldi, Kroger and H-E-B drove growth in the Florida, California and Texas markets, and revealed an overall shift among shoppers toward shorter, more frequent store trips. "As a result, grocers are focusing on developing smaller-format stores, those under 10,000 square feet, with more local offerings to appeal to the surrounding community," said James Cook, JLL's director of retail research.
